Insbesondere wird er für die elf Staaten verwandt, die sich vormals während des amerikanischen Bürgerkrieges zu den Konföderierten Staaten von Amerika zusammengeschlossen hatten: Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas und Virginia. Dixie wird auch adjektivisch eingesetzt, wenn man Besonderheiten der Südstaaten und ihrer Einwohner beschreiben möchte: "Scarlett O'Hara was the epitome of Dixie femininity" (etwa: "... war der Inbegriff einer Südstaatenschönheit"). Der Name Dixie stammt ursprünglich wohl aus Louisiana, weil dort auf der Rückseite der Zehn-Dollar-Noten die Zahl auf französisch mit "dix" angegeben war.
